Karen Louise Hedges, age 78, of rural Oakville, died Monday morning, September 24, 2018, at her home.  The daughter of Verner and Violet Gustafson Amenell, she was born on January 22, 1940 in Burlington.  She married Sandy Hedges on June 10, 1962 in Mediapolis.

Karen graduated from Huron High School in 1958 and from the Burlington Hospital School of Nursing.  After spending two years with Sandy in the Army they returned to the farm and started their family.

She loved to entertain in her home and hosted many gatherings of various clubs and friends.  She hosted three foreign exchange students along with many relatives and friends from Sweden.  Karen and Sandy took many trips to Sweden, Norway, and Denmark to visit her friends and make new ones.

Karen was a lifetime member and very active in the Mediapolis Immanuel Lutheran Church.  The church was the cornerstone of her life.  She was also a long-time member of the Huron area Golden Hour Study Club.

Her family includes her husband, Sandy; three sons, Steve & Dina Hedges of Guttenberg, Jeff & Kim Hedges of Oakville, and Dave & Angie Hedges of Mediapolis; six granddaughters; two step grandsons; a brother, Dick Amenell of Spokane, Washington; and a sister, Pauline Jarrard of Washington.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Judy Thomas.

The funeral ceremony for Karen Hedges will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, September 27, 2018, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis with Rev. Jerleen Schlesser officiating.  Burial will follow at the Hawkeye Cemetery rural Oakville.

Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Memorial gifts will benefit Immanuel Lutheran Church.
