Mary Ellen Griffith, 92, of Morning Sun, died Sunday, March 31, 2019 at the Morning Sun Care Center.  She was born August 12, 1926 at her home to Guy Carlton and Maud Warren Jamison.  She married George Edwin (Rube) Griffith on October 17, 1948.  He preceded her in death on January 6, 2007.

She graduated from Iowa State University in 1948 with a degree in Food and Nutrition.  She was the manager of food services at the Morning Sun school for thirteen years.  She was an active member of the Centenary United Methodist Church of Morning Sun.  She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Morning Sun Lioness, Midway Circle, P.E.O. Chapter ET and United Methodist Women.

She loved when the grandchildren and great-grandchildren would come to visit. In addition to her grandchildren’s activities she enjoyed watching the Hawkeyes, Cyclones, Cardinals, and even the Cubs when they started winning.  Her hands were never idle and she spent many hours crocheting afghans and dish cloths. She loved the Lord and was extremely generous. She always put others ahead of herself.  There was always room at her table, and you never left her home hungry.

Survivors include three daughters, Jamie Sands of Wapello, IA, Georgeann (Tom) Lee of Ellston, IA, and Rebecca (Brent) Hughes of Sterling, Il; nine grandchildren, Jeff (Mikki) Sands, Wendee (Jason) Chase, Tara (Tom) Owen, Brett (Nicole) Lee, Molly (Ryan) Buffington, Stacey (Ross) Buffington, Brenna (Aaron) Wonders, Carina (Dan) Skelton, and Carly (Josh) Miller; seventeen great-grandchildren,  Colby and Cami Whitaker, Emma and Ryan Chase, Ellie, Tate, and Drew Owen, Addy and Parker Lee, Cooper, Cade and Coen Buffington, Camden and Kynlee Buffington, Hayden Wonders, Ruby and CJ Skelton; son-in-law Tony Thomas; and sister, Marjorie Wheeler of Morning Sun.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Beth Thomas; son-in-law, Danny Sands; parents; and sisters, Esther Rickert and Martha Fisher.

Visitation will be from 5-7 at the United Methodist Church in Morning Sun on Thursday. April 4.  Her memorial service will be at the Methodist Church at 11:00 on Friday, April 5.   Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery at a later date. Memorials have been established for the Centenary United Methodist Church, the Bethel Church, or a charity of your choice.

Please accept my sincere sympathy for your loss. All who knew Mary Ellen will miss her terribly. I met Mary Ellen when she was cooking at the school and through United Methodist Women and what a worker she was. She was always there with food, a program or whatever was needed. I also noted that she was active in anything and everything that was going on in her community. I was the shepherdess for United Methodist women and enjoyed many meetings in Mary Ellen's home. She was a wonderful hostess always making everyone feel welcome. She was a blessing to everyone who knew her. May God grant her family peace and comfort at this most difficult time.

Jamie and families,
Sorry to read of your mom's passing away. I know she will be missed by a lot of people and it may be really hard for you since you had been taking care of her before she was in the care center. Prayers for all the family.
